師走 had been used in Japanese old calender system before western calender system was introduced. 師走period started from the end of December and ended in early February. So you can not use 師走 as 12月. And many younger Japanese dont know this old word any more.

The Japanese usually use 12月 instead of 師走. 師走 literally means that priests run, so we occasionally use it when describing how busy we are in December.

Hi we usually use 12月 in talk. We can see 師走 in only calendar.
