Declarative Statements So you can say something like 私はジョンです、but could you also say 私はジョンだ? Does だ function exactly like です, except that だ is more forceful? If not, what are the exceptions / what does だ do? Thanks!

We often introduce ourselves to people that we don't know them. And if you want to introduce yourself to strangers you should use formal sentences. So we don't use だ in this sentence. good luck!

In this case, だ is just the informal version of です. From my understanding though, you probably wouldn't say 私はジョンだ, because you typically don't use informal language when introducing yourself to a stranger. But basically, yes, だ functions like です in this particular case (but not necessarily always).
