A zest is more of a lively interest. 'He has a real zest for life'. 'He has an interest in stamp collecting'. Zest is not very common, so please don't fall into the trap of over-using it.

In my experince zest is usually only used in the phrase 'a zest for life' which Gary has already mentioned.
