開く and 開ける According to the dictionary, there are two ways of reading 開く, 開ける

namely, あく、ひらく and あける、ひらける

Could anyone explain the difference to me?

Are they interchangeable?

They are difinitely interchangebale however certain things will use only one of them. ひらける has more meaning of spreading it open あける has emptying, open something that was closed But both has a meaning of getting rid of obstacles and freeing something. As a native speaker we know by heart but you just have to memorize them:)
