The sentence does not make sense with any of your answers. I think maybe the point you are trying to convey is "in" so I would write it like this. Environmental noise is defined as the noise emitted from sources such as road, rail and air traffic, industries, construction and public works in the neighborhood.

The answer is "d" "that from the neighborhood". It means the noise emitted "from the neighborhood" or "that which is omitted from the neighborhood." Hope this helps! Sinead

If your teacher is teaching the standard way of writing a list then it is 1. otherwise there is no real difference between 1 and 4. 1) Environmental noise is defined as the noise emitted from sources such as road, rail and air traffic, industries, construction and public works, and the neighbourhood" = road and rail traffic and air traffic and industries and construction and public works and the neighborhood. You are just andING everything together. 4) Environmental noise is defined as noise emitted from sources such as road, rail and air traffic, industries, construction and public works, and also that from the neighborhood" = same as 1) everything is andED together plus also you have added in the ambient noise from the neighbourhood Environmental noise is defined as that from the neighborhood and the noise emitted from sources such as road, rail and air traffic, industries, construction and public works," here you have specified the ambient noise from the neighborhood then added the rest of the list

The statement is written in a confusing manner it should read. Environmental noise is defined as the noise emitted from sources such as road, rail, air traffic, industries, construction, public works and the neighborhood. The statement is making a list of noise sources that fall in the same category of noise there is no need for the extra ands in the sentence as it is a list of noise emitters. This is how I was taught to write and use 'and' you would only use another 'and' if you were changing the category.

the answer is 4, although you will hear 1 often. But the question or the subject/topic/point being taught is very vague. Answer 4 is how a native would phrase it, using "That" which specifies what it is the noise from the neighbourhood
