Hi. “He would do as well as any” means “no one would do better than him. Right? If so, why the author wrote “better than most”, which seems to imply he might not be in the top group? Thank you.

He is in the top group, but everyone in the top group is equally good. So, no one is better than he is (even though a few are equal to him), but he is better than everyone who is below the top group.
