What is the difference between the word "China" and "cathay"

"Cathay" is a completely outdated word. It is not used at all today. I just checked a dictionary. It says that the word was popularized by Marco Polo, around the year 1300. The dictionary says "It usually applied only to the area north of the Yangtze River."

China is a country in eastern asia. cathay is a name of China which was called by medieval europe.
