"End" is generally more colloquial. It is usually used in phrases dealing with daily life, including relationships: "After three years, she finally ended the relationship." "Terminate" is more formal and is more commonly heard in business and medical contexts: "After much deliberation, she terminated the pregnancy" (she had an abortion); "Due to the employee's irresponsibility, his employer terminated his contract" (he was fired).
