What is the difference between a barber and a hairdresser, and what do you call the place in the US? What is the difference between a barber and a hairdresser as a job? Regarding the place, do I say I will get my hair cut at the barbershop or at the barber's? I would also love to hear the thoughts of British English speakers.

In the US a barbershop (or the "Barbers" saying either is fine) generally does men's haircuts (or short haircuts) and provides shaving services. A Hairdresser works in a Hair Salon which will do unisex haircuts but generally cater more towards women's haircuts, styling, and color. Sometimes they will provide waxing, and facial services as well.
