Does this sound natural?? There were total 10 candidates in this competition. Three nominees were nominated by three different parties. Their names are John,Paul, and Angela. John sees Paul as his main rival, but Paul sees Angela is his main competitor. So there are only three main competitors in this competition. The competition got off to a tense start.

If three nominees are nominated by three different parties, that is a total of nine nominees. I assume it means "three different parties each nominated one candidate"?

Not quite: There was a total of 10 or There were 10 candidates in total Their names are John, Paul, and Angela. <- space after comma I would say "Angela as his main competitor." but 'is' sort--of works too.
