Hi Maggie, Metaphorically speaking for sure. It appears that someone has committed a wrong but not with intent. The first sentence is a statement of how the evil has occurred without intent. He did not choose the side of the devil, so to speak. Trappings refers to what comes along with a situation. Here, the trappings of a civilized self are love, respect and honor. "with no say" indicates that the event has come upon the man without awareness or challenge from the man himself. he has allowed this to happen, without a voice. I hope I've offered some clarity here. Have a good day, Stephen
