Which one is right and most often used?
I came across this sentence in Duolingo: "I need it" written as "Das brauche ich". But I thought it would be "Ich brauche das". I think both are correct but which form is commonly used?

You can use both sentences, as they are both grammatically correct. The word in the beginning of a sentence is usually the one on which you put emphasize. So in one case the 'das' or 'ich'.
An example: Morgen habe ich Pruefung. (Tomorrow I have class). Here you want to stress that you have class tomorrow and therefore you are busy.
