A manipulative person tries to control people to their advantage: dont understand how to control people to (thier)advantage i think it should be control people to (my) advantage how to control them and in same time to thier advantage?

It's singular "they". "Their" refers to the manipulative person.

Yes, the example is a bit confusing, but 'their' is connected to the manipulative person. If I want to control myself, I control myself for my own advantage.
