What is a "banked motorway"? And is "banked highway" used in the UK? Thank you :)

A banked motorway has steep banks up each side, either because it was cut through a hill or artificial mounds were built to separate the motorway from built up areas. Highway isn’t used interchangeably with motorway in the UK, where highway is used it’s usually as a legal or technical term e.g ‘public highway’ to refer to a stretch of public road.
