I have a question about English.
I am reading a book about Chinese culture English, and I am trapped in this problem. I don't know why the sentence bellow used the word "before"? What is "before"here meaning?
One copy even passed before the critical eyes of Qing Emperor Qianlong(r. 1736-1795).

In this case the meaning is "in front of" - the emperor saw that one copy.

Well, it just means that Emperor Qianlong read the book. He held the book in front of his eyes. Got it ?
