As with all pets, you should know what breed of dog (or at least best guess) you want to get, what type of food/diet restrictions the dog has, how much space does the dog need to roam (does the dog need a lot of outdoor space to run around), does the dog have a place to sleep, are they good with other animals and people, especially children, if you have a backyard will the dog be able to jump over any fencing, you should know where the nearest veterinarian is, if the breed has any medical issues that may occur (heartworms, hip issues, etc.), when to take your pet to the vet for check-ups, are there any small toys or items around the house that the dog may eat or any valuables that should be secured so as to not get knocked over. I am sure I'm missing some other tips but these should be a good place to start. I hope they help!
