What does ' to justify our tastes to ourselves.' mean? COuld you explain it to me? HELP ME!! We know that Shakespeare wrote poetry and Tupper doggerel, but it by no means follows that we can always distinguish doggerel from poetry; and while it is not perhaps of consequence whether we are able to inform others why we respect the work of one or another, it is of much importance that we be in a position to justify our tastes to ourselves.

Hi Terry, it means that it should not be necessary to justify our tastes . All people like different things , different kinds of music , clothes , art etc , we shouldn’t have to give a reason or explain why we like something , why it is better than something else , just that it is our taste or has an emotional impact on us in some way . Personal preference should not need to be justified .

To explain or to give reason , why we like or dislike something . To qualify why you prefer X to Y , to explain to someone why you like X more than Y
