Modern poetry doesn't really have particular styles. Most poems seem to be in free form. Older poetry had more rigid styling. 시조 is one such genre of poems with a rigid meter. There is also a "seven-five" meter (seven and five syllable phrases alternating) which was common at one time. Nowadays, most poems don't seem to conform to such explicit forms. Here are three examples from different periods (the old ones are updated to modern spelling) "충의가" - 김상헌 (시조, 1639?) 가노라 삼각산아 다시 보자 한강수야 고국산천을 떠나고자 하랴마는 시절이 하수상하니 올동말동 하여라 "진달래꽃" (Azaleas) - 김소월 (7.5조, 1925) 나 보기가 역겨워 가실 때에는 말없이 고이 보내 드리오리다 영변에 약산 진달래꽃, 아름 따다 가실 길에 뿌리오리다 가시는 걸음 걸음 놓인 그 꽃을 사뿐히 즈려 밟고 가시옵소서 나 보기가 역겨워 가실 때에는 죽어도 아니 눈물 흘리오리다 (김소월 and his 진달래꽃 are probably the best loved poet and poem in Korean history. It would be rare for a Korean not to have heard of this poem.) "집으로 간다" (I go home) - 이향아 (free style, 1998) 식구들이 모두 돌와왔을까 이젠 오늘을 마감해도 좋은가 아침마다 가출했다가 저녁마다 참회하듯 다시 돌아와 떨리는 손가락으로 초인종을 누른다 집은 내 열등한 발목, 발목을 잡아끄는 동아줄 사막과 얼음산과 가시덩굴을 넘어 이리와 승량이와 여우굴을 지나 나 돌아왔노라 시리고 아픈 이름 가족이여 이렇게 돌아올 집이 있노라 저녁 식탁엔 눈물이 안개처럼 자욱하고 그러나 우린 다시 내일의 가출을 음모하면서 각각 제 방으로 타인들처럼 흩어졌다
