Do you know why Nigerian census figures have been politically contested? One very basic problem for international data sets is that many countries do not have reliable population figures, for example Nigerian census figures have been politically contested because of their influence on the ethnic balance of power. 1)Nigerian census figures have been politically contested because of their influence on the ethnic balance of power. Nigeria is about half Christian and half Muslim, and is about a third Hausa, a fifth Yoruba, a fifth Igbo, and the rest of the population consists of many, many other ethnic groups. If you can affect the national census and make one group look bigger than it really is, it can get more power than it should have. So, every group tries to interfere with the census, to make their own group look bigger and other groups look smaller.
