There's a funny expression. When a person starts a conversation on something that has already been discussed, the other person would say, "Ты опять?!" (Why on earth again?) This two words at present have the same meaning and in most cases doesn't matter what word is use. But they have different etymology. In brief: снова (с нова, с нового) means start something with clean sheet, return on start and try from scratch; and опять (вспять) means turn events backwards and repiat same again.
