I've heard English is a Germanic language, but somehow I can't quite see where the connection is... How similar is English to German?  In terms of vocabulary, English seems to have borrowed significantly more from French.  Even grammatically, I'm not sure where the connection is between (modern) German and English.   Just curious...

You should read John McWhorter's book Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue. It explains the Germanic origins of English and how it was affected other languages over time. It focuses heavily on the grammar over the vocabulary.
