Difference between で and に What's the difference between the particles で and に? In what context are they both used? Also, do either of the phrases "これは英語で何ですか / これは英語になんですか" make any sense? If not, what would be the correct way to ask what something is in English?

I'd like to talk about the former question. ...It's complex. Examples of "で" 英語で何と言いますか?(The "で" is "in".) 駅で会いましょう。(It's "at".) この道具で直せます。(It's "with".) etc. Examples of "に" 私は駅に行きます。(It's "to") 私は彼に質問します。(I'll ask him.) 私は音楽に興味を持っています。(It's "in") etc. So I suggest you learn how to use them in short phrases. Good luck!

>What's the difference between the particles で and に? 「で」「に」 both are a marker for a place. I believe you already knew it and thought up two expressions like "これは英語で何ですか / これは英語になんですか". However, the former is OK but the latter is NG. What makes this difference. I will try to explain radically. に: <point> of your action, the target point you do "to/at" で: <platform> of your action, where you do. 公園に行きます。the place you go to is the park 公園で遊びます。the platform/field you are playing on is the park 東京に行きます。the place you go to is Tokyo 東京に住んでいます。the point(on the map) you live in is Tokyo 東京で住んでいます。<wrong> 東京に働いています。<wrong> 東京で働いています。the platform you are working on is Tokyo 東京で暮らしています。the platform/field you are leading your everyday life on is the Tokyo 東京に暮らしています: <wrong> 日本語に関心があります。the point your interest goes to is the Japanese language. 日本語で書きます。the platform/tool you write on/with is the park これにします(決めます):The point your decision goes to is "これ(this)". これで終わりです。:The platform where it ends is "これ” あなたに質問しています。:The point/person I am asking to is you. あなたで質問しています。:<wrong> OK: 「これは英語で何ですか」 これは何ですか? What is this. これは英語で何ですか? The platform of "What is this" is English or これは英語で(いうと)何ですか? The tool/platform when you describe something with is English NG: 「これは英語に何ですか」 <wrong: make no sense> OK: これは英語にすると、何ですか(or どうなりますか?) What will this be if you make/translate it into English? The point you want to make it into is English (word/words)

Also, do either of the phrases "これは英語で何ですか / これは英語になんですか" make any sense? / The former does make sense, though the latter does not.
