Both are fine in terms of word order. When an adverb modifies the whole sentence or phrase, you usually put it either at the beginning of the sentence before a comma or just before the (main) verb. Don't forget to insert a space after the comma, though. One thought: do you really mean 'went to work'? 'Went to work' suggests picking up his bag, leaving the house, getting on a bus, and so on. Or do you mean 'He got to work on time' - meaning that he arrived at work on time?
