''Apart'' or ''Separated'' (by...)? I wonder whether the word ''by'' can be used after ''apart'' in a sentence. For instance, could I say like ''Paradise and hell are kept apart by a gulf'' ? or do I have to use the word ''by'' only after the word ''separated'' to convey the meaning of distance between two things? I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this matter.
