Clould vs was able to ? Are both sentences correct to describe a one time past event ? I could come early. I was able to come early.

When you use "I could come early" it's more like supposition, it hasn't happened yet. In the other hand "I was able to come early" it's when the action it already happened.

I could come early - you cannot tell the tense, except by context. Could be conditional future. Could be past. I was able to come early - past tense.
