Why not “a friend ”?
I'm going to become friends with a Mexican.
I have a question about the sentence. Why the number of friend and Mexican is different? I thought “I’m going to become a friend with a Mexican. ” is right.

We always say 'make friends', 'become friends', 'be friends' and 'stay friends' with another person. The key idea here is 'with' - this phrase refers to BOTH of you. 'Friends' is plural because it refers to the two people together.

You can say:make friends with Mexican.

You don't normally use 'become friends 'when talking in the future. How do you know you are going to become friends?. It's something that we can't really plan or know, it just happens.
Therefore it's a but unnatural to say I'm going to become friends. What would sound better is, "I'd like to make friends with a Mexican'
