When I was young I would smoke...why is it wrong? smoke is an action verb and not a state verb ....so both used to and would can be used in the above sentence.

"...I would smoke" sounds like you're saying "when I was young I would OCCASIONALLY smoke" (i.e. at a party, when you were stressed etc). "...I used to smoke" implies you were a full-time smoker.
