I wonder what 'chains' mean here Descriptions are as below: The sky had cleared. After so long among clouds the stars seemed very bright, hung in the darkness like lamp. If we listened, we would hear the faint twisting of their chains in the breeze. What does 'their chains' mean here? How do chains have anything to do with stars??

I think it is referring to the chains on which a lamp would be hung from Based on the context.

It is the writer imagining the faint twisting of the stars on chains. The stars to the writer seemed to be as if they were hanging on chains in the sky [when the sky was not clear] . Then the skies cleared and that is how it looked when the sky was now bright but dark with the stars seemingly hanging there in the sky..

This is a creative writing, thus the writer wants the reader to be imaginative interpreting it. to interpret this: the "stars" was presented/compared to a lamp hanging with "chains" , a lamp that shines brightly in the darkness (at night) the writer wants the reader to imagine a silent night and that you could even hear a faint twisting (sound) of the "chains" (as if it was a real lamp hanging in the sky)
