Why ''since'' is used exclusively in perfect tenses but ''for'' doesn't suffer from the same fate?

Okay, I understand now. This has to do with choosing the right preposition. "for" indicates a duration of time in its entirety, whereas "since" means from a certain time until the present moment or time.
