How do you say this another way? We made great time.

Generally it means that a journey was shorter (in time) than expected. We arrived earlier than expected. We arrived earlier than we thought we would. It did not take as long as we thought.

We were quicker than we expected.

You might also be meaning "we had a great time." :) But it's ok to also say "we made great time" if you achieved or completed something quick. Example: you and your friend walked to the summit of a mountain and you thought it would take 8 hours but you both did it in 5 hours.
