Is English needed in Russia? I see a lot of people from Russia wanting to learn English. Most of them though not all look like young students to me. I was therefore wondering how important English is in Russia now for academic or professional reasons. Or maybe there are other reasons I'm not aware of. It's more of a cultural than language issue, so I've listed it under culture. I suppose only Russians can really answer this.

Actually, it seems to me that a lot of Russians are learning English so they can get *out* of Russia, i.e. immigrate to Canada / the USA / Australia / the European Union.
