A contagious disease is spread from person to person. An infectious disease is any disease caused by bacteria, viruses, etc, no matter now it is spread. The flu is both infectious and contagious. Yellow fever (from the bite of infected mosquito) is infectious only.

An infectious disease is a disease that is spread through person to person contact. A contagious disease is a disease that is spread through the environment (air, drinking water etc) A lot of times people will forget the above "difference" and interchange the 2 terms.
