Which one is correct?

Would you tell me which one of these sentences makes sense?
1- Visiting the county did so much to my local knowledge of the language and people.
2- Visiting the county did so much to broaden my knowledge of the language and people.

2 is correct
1 is wrong, it could be improved as follows
Visiting the county did so much FOR my [local] knowledge of the language and people.

The 2nd is correct.
The first is almost correct - just a small change is needed. Just replace 'to' with 'for':
"Visiting the county did so much for my local knowledge of the language and people."
