Empathy vs sympathy . Help to understand on situations Thanks Did I understand correctly difference between empathy and sympathy. Empathy is heartbreaking it means that you understand feeling of other people. For example, if your friends cat dies you can feel his pain because your cat also dies and you understand the suffering of your friend as you experienced it too. Sympathy means you are sorry for your friend but you cant imagine what it means to lose your favourite pet as you didn't have to endure it in your life

Empathy is feeling things more deeply for the other person, fully sharing the feelings. Sympathy is when you're just feeling sorry, not necessarily sharing the feelings of the other person (at least not fully). I hope it helps!

Yes, you're right. With 'empathy' you are imagining yourself as that person, or putting yourself in his shoes. You feel his loss as if it were happening to you. Sympathy is different. You show compassion, you show your regret, but unlike empathy, you do not feel the pain as if it were happening to you.
