to go round the tree or around the tree?
and which is mainly used in the US?

When used with go, it's always go around the tree (or go around the car, building, etc). Round probably used to be used for the same thing, but not in current use.

Both are technically correct, but as Tim says, in the US we always use "around." I think "to go round" is fairly common in British English, but it sounds a bit strange to US speakers.
