are they commonly used: "hard put" and "hard put to it"? Are they used in American English?

These are fairly uncommon, but you do hear hard put once in a while. It sounds like an older phrase that younger people wouldn't use. I can't think of a time I've heard "hard put to it". Hard-pressed has similar meaning to hard put and is more common.
