I don't consider 'al' to be wrong. It might be Monday and all your teachers have given you a lot more homework than you anticipated. The problem is with 'ophoopt'. Homework does not accumulate on its own but your sentence suggests that if you don't stay at home and work, your pile of homework is actually going to get bigger.
Cf.: 'Ik had graag willen komen, maar ik heb al heel veel hoofdpijn en ik wil niet dat het nog erger wordt. Dus ik blijf liever thuis.'
And:
'Ik heb al heel veel huiswerk en ik wil niet dat ik nog meer in tijdnood kom.'
It's also interesting to note the difference between 'Ik had graag willen komen' and 'Ik zou graag willen komen'. Both can be used for future events, but the former implies that you've decided against it, whereas the latter suggest that you're still thinking about it. In that case, 'dacht dat het beter zou zijn' needs to become 'denk dat het beter is'.
