Is there a better way to write this sentence?
Russia’s involvement in the conflict stemmed from its interest in recovering the territorial losses it had suffered after the Crimean War and gaining control over the Black Sea region.
It’s perfectly correct and native, but ambiguous. Does “gaining control over the Black Sea region” refer back to “its interest in” or “stemmed from”? I imagine it’s the former, but it’s not really clear.
