It's original, I'll give you that——What was Buttigieg indicating by this? In the 3rd the Democratic debate Pete Buttigieg gave this comment after hearing Andrew Yang's speech. I suppose it's a sort of unfriendly joke? Does Buttigieg mean that Yang's proposal was no more than a cliche? But I thought Yang is the fist and so far the only candidate that supports UBI? Some links I find: discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/Conservative/comments/d3q9if/candidates_laugh_at_yangs_free_cash_contest_its/ news: https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/461201-buttigieg-on-yang-its-original-ill-give-you-that script: https://menrec.com/candidates-laugh-at-yangs-free-cash-contest-its-original-ill-give-you-that/ I also find Pete Buttigieg supporters have 'Pete' hats when Bernie Sanders is often referred to as 'Bernie'(in some YouTube politic comments channels). Is this way of addressing politician indicates you are in favour of them or at least you like them, so you call them as if they are your friends?

Buttigieg doesn't think much of Yang's plan for UBI and he is also being patronising. Patronising - condescending and feeling superior to Yang. I hope I am not being patronising telling you this. :-) It's original - no one thought of it before. I don't know anything much about american politics but I think this is untrue. I'll give you that - I will concede that.

Simon’s answer is good. “It’s original, I’ll give you that.” Implies that’s the best thing you can say about it, so yes it’s condescending. Yes a politician using their first name like that is an attempt to be friendly as if you were on a first name basis with them.
