past perfect My teacher throw us this question. 'What did he do for living before he had become a writer?' I found the grammar of this sentence confusing. From what I've learnt, shouldn't the past perfect refer to an past event that HAD OCCURED before another past action. Can someone shed some light on this one? Thank you in advance!

That is not correct. It should be 'he became'. There is also a missing 'a' before 'living'. Time to get a better teacher?
