It means that when two relationships are conjoined that the balance of power is not always equal, especially when one side has an advantage over another. But it goes on to say that the conjoined relationship can establish a positive advantage, especially when one of the conjoined elements has a disadvantage due to the relationship. The example used is that a dormant trait/attribute can be "illuminated" do to the conjoined relationship. In return, this would even any potential advantage one element has over another.
