In this case the meaning of dues is not about money, but it’s similar. OED gives a definition of “to fulfill one’s obligation” but that’s also not entirely accurate in this use. In this case it’s more about putting in a lot of hard work to make yourself a valuable part of a company/profession. It’s like paying money you owe for something but you don’t pay any money and you don’t owe it. You’re paying with your time and effort and that contribution is considered valuable and makes you a more valuable employee.
