pas de bas??? But apparently, doing a pas de bas was completely beyond him, and the progressive dances – where you had to keep changing partners – utterly baffled him. I would like to know what does " pas de bas" here mean. Thanks .

I think you many be talking about the French "Pas de Basque" which is often anglicised to sound like "Pas de bas" I think in French it means step of the Basques. It is a dance step in ballet and in scottish country dancing. You can Google it.
