grammar question Freedom of speech means that American citizens are allowed to say whatever they want to about ideas or people.(From <Introduction to the United States>) Question: Is there a missed "say" after "whatever they want to" in the original sentence?

You do not need to repeat the verb after the 'whatever you want to', but you could and still be correct You can do whatever you want to / You can do whatever you want to do I can eat whatever I want to / I can eat whatever I want to eat. Hope this helps, Richard

It's not missed. You dont need to repeat "say". However, I think "are allowed to talk about anything or anyone" would be more natural.
