In my text-book there is a sentence - Many people learn to play an instruments. Is the article "an" a misprint?

Yes, this is a mistake. You can correct it in two ways:

Many people learn to play an instrument.

Yes. The word would work if “instruments” was not plural. The sentence also makes sense if “an” is removed.
