The black thing, you being black... Hello, in an American movie Attorney Kevin is celebrating his another victory in court at the bar in Florida when he's approached by a representative for a New York law firm. Leamon: We want you to come to New York, help us pick a jury. Kevin laughing: I tell you, man, you're pretty damn good. Your card is great. And the black thing, you being black... Whose idea was that? Paul's? That's just brilliant. I'm just not drunk enough yet to fall for it. Yes, Leamon is black; however the sentence "And the black thing, you being black" (is it even a sentence at all?) just doesn't make much sense. What is "the black thing"? And would the correct sentence look like "The black thing is that you are black"?

The phrases are incomplete and signify that the speaker is nervous about broaching a sensitive issue. "you being black" simply means that Kevin is black/ African American. "The black thing" is trickier. It goes right back to slavery and the struggle of black people against prejudice. This makes racial issues very sensitive. The speaker thinks that the fact that Kevin is black will help him to pick a jury. I guess that there is a trial in which there is a black defendant or that racial issues are involved in some way and the speaker wants to pick jury members who will not be prejudiced against black people.
