Short for electronic government. e stands for electronic and can be paired with a host of other things, such as e-paper, e-trading, e-banking, e-filing, etc. most of which signify actions or transactions which are carried out electronically, ie. online without the use of physical paper or files. e-Government usually refers to any government's efforts to make some its functions online-friendly or to improve its administrative systems by putting in place IT systems to link up various departments. For example, e-filing is a program in Malaysia which allows taxpayers to fill in and submit their annual income tax returns online through the internet.
