For me I'd use either for any departure.
To hit the road may be literal or figurative, but it just means leave,
New Zealand English.

I've got to get going: Can be used in any circumstance when leaving
I've got to hit the road: I only say this when I am driving, like using the road to leave. If I had to leave but was walking I wouldn't say this.
