How should we ask to know the order of things? Everything is in the timeline where one happens earlier than others, for example, A is the fourth student to come to school today. How should we ask to get a specific answer like this?

You could try: “In what order did the students arrive today?” or “Who arrived first? Who arrived second? . . .” Or “How many students arrived before student A?” Simply asking “In what order did student A arrive?” — this sounds strange and ambiguous.
