If you write a katakana word in hiragana, will Japanese people understand? Just wondering how strange that would look.

We do understand but a bit strange (^-^;) We never write katakana words in hiragana. If the sentence is long, it will be very quite hard to read. It's hard to figure out where each word starts and ends. りびんぐじゃなくてきっちんででとろいとののえるとちゃっとしてたらままにきれられかなりぶるー。 And there are cerain words which you have to write in katakana or we will misunderstand you. for example, タイ (Thailand) たい(fish, sea bream)
